Gurinder Chadha (OBE) is an English film director of Kenya-Asian origin, who grew up in London. She completed her post-graduaton from the London College of Printing and started her media career in radio in the mid-1980s with BBC as a news reporter. After working with BBC and Channel 4 on some award-winning documentaries, she set up her production company called Umbi films. Her first film was Nice Arrangement (1991) about a British Asian wedding, that was selected for the Cannes Film Festival Critic's section. Most of her films explore the lives of Indians living in England, showcasing the trials of Indian women living in England. They address many social and emotional issues faced by immigrants caught between two worlds.

She has also made many adaptations from book to film. Bhaji On the Beach (1993), Bend it Like Beckham (2002), Bride and Prejudice (2004), It's a Wonderful Afterlife (2010) are her famous films. Viceroy's House (2017) is her latest feature.
