Good Running Shoes

We can talk about running shoes all day, but we will keep this short. If you are going running, you need a good pair of running shoes. Running shoes make a big difference in your comfort during and after a run. It also keeps your feet from agonizing blisters and even shin splints. Casual shoes are never a good idea to run in.

Warm Up Properly Before you Run

Before you head for a run, mobilise your body before you go. Start with a few squats, leg swings and trunk swings before you get going. The more prepared your body is for the run, the less likely you will injure your joints during your run. The warmer your body the better it will be at withstanding the impact you are going to put it through.

Start Small and Build up

If you are just getting started, you should aim to run just under 1km. in your first week. A gradual build up is necessary to get your body used to the run. Even if you have run 20km 5 years ago, the more deconditioned you are, the more likely it is that you will be sore after a big run.

Map Your Journey Out

Know where you are going to go. Unless you have a park near you where you can run around in, you need to take a look at the track that you are going to run on. Drive around the area that you are going to go and make sure that it is well lit and has a designated running track for you to run on. Otherwise you will need to find somewhere else that is more convenient for you to run in without having to dodge cars or bikes.

Record your Workouts

We are a big fan of keeping track of your workouts. Use apps like RunKeeper, Nike+ or C25K to track your workouts. Know when and how far you have run so that you can work on improving your runs, times and recovery. Treat your workouts like a science experiment. Log the work you do and track your results. Keeping track of your progress will keep you interested and motivated for your exercise.
